Galvanised or Black Steel Hollow Sections in Qatar's Climate

One of the first decisions is the finish: pre-galvanised or black (uncoated mild steel). Qatar's heat, humidity and salty coastal air make this choice more important than it is in many other places.
Galvanised or Black Steel Hollow Sections in Qatar's Climate
Pre-galvanised sections
Pre-galvanised tubes and hollow sections are made from steel that already carries a zinc coating. The zinc protects the steel underneath from rust, so these sections:
- suit outdoor, light-duty work such as fencing frames, shades, canopies and racking
- save time, because they do not need painting before use
- look clean and uniform when installed
Remember that cutting and welding remove the zinc at those points. Treat every cut end and weld with a zinc-rich paint so rust does not start there.
Black hollow sections
Black hollow sections have no protective coating. They are usually the more economical option and are ideal when:
- the work will be painted or powder-coated after fabrication
- the steel will be indoors or enclosed
- the frame will be heavily welded, where pre-galvanised coating would be lost anyway
Outdoors, black steel must be properly cleaned, primed and painted, otherwise it will rust quickly in Qatar's humidity.
What about heavy outdoor structures?
For heavily loaded or highly exposed structures, many projects fabricate in black steel and then hot-dip galvanise the finished pieces, which coats every surface, inside and out. Your engineer or consultant will specify which protection your project needs.
